Volleyball team to compete at Nationals

The women’s volleyball team has an undefeated season and is on their way to Championships. Sunday the Hornets won their Region Three Championship B match against Erie CC, advancing the team to the 2021 NJCAA Division Three Volleyball Championship in Rochester, Minnesota.

They will be flown out to compete at the Rochester Minnesota Regional Sports Center November 11-13. Both the Athletic Director and President of SUNY Broome will be accompanying the team to Championships. 12 teams will be competing, Hornets are landed in the top 5 teams.

The Hornets beat the Kats Sunday with a straight sweep; set scores 25-18, 25-23, 25-20. On the offense, Macey Gibson led with 10 kills and a .307 hitting percentage, and Katherine Bennonorth added 8 kills. 29 assists and 4 aces were added by Mackenzie Struble, Savanna Davis led 17 digs and Sara Zepkowski had 7 blocks. 

Player Kylee Cunningham expressed the honor it has been to play on the team, “I have made so many lifelong friends and memories. This sport has been a part of my life for so many years and for my last season to come to an end being undefeated and attending nationals is an unexplainable feeling. I can’t thank my fellow players and my coaches enough for making this season nothing short of amazing.”

Davis, Bennorth, and Gibson were named to the All-tournament team and Struble was named Tournament MVP. Coach Ashlee Speen won both Conference and Region Three Coach of the Year.
